When Alberto and I were in Maine last summer, we saw a set of napkin rings that were super adorable. They were made out of little preppy belts that used D-ring buckles. Alberto looked at me, and I saw the light bulb above his head. He said, “our old ties!” I was a little dubious, but why not try it, right? It turned out to be a great idea and the tie we used was not really preppy, but it was perfect for the holiday season!
Here’s what we used to make the napkin rings:
- A necktie
- 12 links of decorative chain (or 6 D-ring buckles)
Yep! That’s it, and we had both on hand!
This is what we needed to put it together:
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Two sets of pliers
Let’s Make some Napkin Rings!
- Start with the skinny end of the tie and cut the point off of the end.
- Next, measure 9-inches, cut the tie and continue cutting 9-inch lengths throughout the tie.
- Continue by folding the ends into the tie, and iron to hold the fabric in place.
- Sew the end in place and repeat on the other end, and continue with all of the lengths.
Cocktail Break!
Okay! This may seem a little early, but they’re aren’t that many steps in this post. But we always make time for a cocktail…and given the season, I think a glass of champagne may be in order! We’ll celebrate with a real cocktail this New Year’s weekend!
One, Two, Buckle My Shoe!
- To make the buckle, start by breaking open the chain link and removing two links. Make sure you close the second link.
- Next, take one of the tie strips, and thread through both of the links.
- Fold the end over the links and sew in place. Repeat for all of the other strips.
Such an easy project that provides an elegant accent to our New Year’s table. I had no idea that these would come out so nice or be this easy! Happy 2012!
